Chapter 63

Chapter 63.

Nelly’s POV.

The mouthwatering scent of roasted chicken filled the air, rousingfrom my sleep. My eyelids fluttered open,

and | expected to see Kex beside me, but the bed was empty. | sat up, stretching my stiff limbs, and the events

of the night before cflooding

back.

A smile crept across my face, the memories still fresh and vivid. | felt a pang of regret, but the joy and

excitement of the night lingered, like the warm embers of a dying fire.

As | gazed at my brother's portrait, | couldn't help but smile. Yesterday had been the best birthday I'd ever had,

all thanks to Kex. | reached out and ran my fingers across the painted surface, feeling the coolness of the glass. |

held the portrait close, whispering to it as if my brother could hear me.

“Kex is really trying to make you proud,” | said, my voice thick with emotion.

| kissed the frand hugged it tightly, my heart full of gratitude and longing. | wondered if my brother was

somewhere out there, watching over me..

A sudden cold breeze drifted through the room, sending a shiver down my spine. For a moment, | felt as if my

brother was there with me. Then | heard a knock at the door. | scrambled to wrap my gown around me,

around me, but before | could reach the door, Kex burst through it.

“No need,” he said, his voice urgent.

| stared at him, confused and a little alarmed. What was happening?

| tried to listen, but Kex’s voice was muffled, his words indecipherable. | wanted to spy on him, to find out what

was going on, but | knew it was wrong.

So | sat there, tapping my foot impatiently, my mind racing with possibilities. What if something was wrong?

What if he was in danger? But | forced myself to stay put, to trust that he would tellwhat was going on when

he was ready.

The door swung open, and he entered, his eyes scanning the room, darting from side to side.

“Who was that?” | asked him, my curiosity piqued.

He just shrugged and said, “Nobody important.”

Then his phone buzzed with a notification, and he grabbed it quickly, his eyes darting. fromto the screen. He

typed something and put the phone away, saying, “Let's eat breakfast.”

I nodded, my mind still reeling from the strange encounter.

| stepped into the bathroom and turned on the light. | brushed my teeth, splashed cold water on my face, and

looked at myself in the mirror. I looked tired, my eyes heavy with dark circles, and | sighed.

It

put on my black gown and opened the bathroom door, the smell of breakfast wafting into the room. | took Kex’s

hand, and we walked out together, my mind still buzzing with questions.

We sat down, and a delicious smell of bacon and eggs filled the air. A plate of steaming food sat on the table,

and my stomach growled in anticipation.

“Just want to express my sincerest gratitude for yesterday,” | said, picking up a fork and taking a bite of chicken.

“It’s nothing,” he said with a smile. Then he reached for his phone, and | saw him tapping on the screen.

“Kex?” | called out, but there was no response.

“Damn idiot!” | cursed under my breath, frustrated by his lack of attention.

I dug into my food, but it was difficult to enjoy it when he was so absorbed in his phone.

| scanned the room, desperate for something to distract me, but there was nothing.

| looked back at him, and his gaze was still fixed on the screen. | felt a surge of irritation, and | wondered how

long he would be glued to that thing. It was almost as if |

weren't even there.

| couldn’t help but feel a pang of jealousy. Was he busy texting his mate? Was that why he couldn't sparea

moment of his attention? Without thinking, | blurted out.

“Kex! I'm right here! I'm sitting down here and all you do is press your phone. Can't you givesof your

time?”

My outburst drew the attention of everyone in the room, and | felt a wave of embarrassment wash over me. | had

made a scene, and | wasn’t sure how to fix it. | could feel the heat rising in my cheeks, and | wished | had not

said it.

Kex’s mouth opened and closed several times, as if he was searching for the right words.

“I'm sorry,” he finally said. “But | was just trying to settle something.”

I didn’t wait to hear anymore. | stood up, grabbing my coat and purse.

“Nelly, wait!” he called after me, running to catch up. I kept walking, trying to put distance between us. “Nelly,

please!” he pleaded, his breath coming in gasps.

| stopped, but I didn’t turn around. | couldn’t face him. He walked up toand gently took my hands in his.

“I'm sorry,” he said, his voice full of remorse. “I know I've been neglecting you. It’s not. that I'm ignoring you but

have been busy settling sstuff,” He said, in a soft voice. | couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy at the

thought that it might be his mate.

“Were you busy, or you were flirting with your mate?” | asked.

“Are you jealous?” he asked, a slight smile playing on his lips.

| turned away, not wanting him to see the emotions playing across my face. “I just want your attention.” | said,

my voice quiet but firm.

“It's because we're together,” | said, his eyes saying otherwise.

He chuckled at my response.” you are jealous,” he said, his eyes twinkling.

“I'm not jealous.” | said, but even I could hear the falseness in my voice.

He laughed, the sound warm and rich. | turned playful, hitting his chest, but he caught my hands, holding them

tightly. We stood there, staring into each other's eyes, caught in a moment of intimacy. The world around us fell

away, and for a moment, it was just the two of us.

| pulled my hands away, forcing myself to remember that he had a mate.

“Let's just go home,” | said, the words catching in my throat.

He hesitated, as if he wanted to say something. But then he nodded, his expression. guarded. We started

walking back to the car, the silence between us heavy and uncomfortable. | couldn't help but feel like something

had changed.

We climbed into the car, the silence stretching between us like a yawning chasm. He fiddled with his phone,

occasionally glancing atas if he wanted to say something. | could tell he was trying to engagein

conversation, but it felt forced and awkward.

| decided to close my eyes, pretending to sleep. | didn’t want to be here, didn’t want to see him distracted by his

phone. | needed to know who he was chatting with. My mind. was racing, imagining all kinds of scenarios.

Something keeps on tellingit’s his

mate.
